Chance Meeting on a Dissecting Table

Brian Dettmer's Altered Books: "In this work I begin with an existing book and seal its edges, creating an enclosed vessel full of unearthed potential. I cut into the surface of the book and dissect through it from the front. I work with knives, tweezers and surgical tools to carve one page at a time, exposing each layer while cutting around ideas and images of interest. Nothing inside the books is relocated or implanted, only removed. Images and ideas are revealed to expose alternate histories and memories. My work is a collaboration with the existing material and its past creators and the completed pieces expose new relationships of the book’s internal elements exactly where they have been since their original conception."

LOSHADKA

Art group's blog here.
"Loshadka means 'pony' in Russian, the native language of founding member Ilia Ovechkin. It's a twee word, coded in a foreign tongue, and constantly rearranged in gibberish anagrams on the title bar of http://loshadka.org/ -- a compounded transformation that makes a neat metaphor for the group's activity. Members take YouTube home videos, naïve digital art, advertisements and other online junk, then tweak and recontextualize them. Loshadka is one of a handful of artists' group blogs, also called "surfing clubs," since the posted objects come from rambling sessions of Web browsing. New media theorist Lev Manovich has compared the net surfer to the flaneur, and Loshadka's giddy, dark sense of humor shares a certain detachment with Baudelaire's perceptive dandy. -  http://www.artinamericamagazine.com/news-opinion/finer-things/2009-03-19/loshadka-surfing-club/

Fingering Instabilities

Laplacian instability occurs when a smooth interface evolving under a Laplacian field develops rapidly growing spikes and branches …The instability has been connected to many disparate phenomena, such as dendrites on snowflakes, forks on lightning, quasi-steady-state fracture, lobes on lichen, coral, riverbeds, vasculature, and urban sprawl patterns. Since the formation of non-smooth features from smooth initial conditions is counter-intuitive, this topic has attracted attention in physics, chemistry, and material science…

From 20 Jazz-Funk Greats, with a taste of their entertaining sci-fi commentary:

"Adult. were that blinding beacon of paranoia awaiting at home after a cocaine-fuelled night in the Electroclah Babylon. The half glimpsed hallucination of a Bauhaus tiger with stroboscopic eyes snarling from your surgical looking chaise longue.

"Their greatness, never doubted, hit us again while we were picking some tunes for the most excellent T O N G U E S night a couple of weeks ago. It is a testament to the madness of the early noughts that they were considered a ‘party band’, when in all honesty they were cartographers of a geography of serrated edges, autobahns of modernity built on a regolith of psychosis and future shock."
